Class 120(2) An internal expanding brake for a spindle of a twisting or spinning machine comprises a split ring which extends within a circular recess in the wharve and a ring expanding member which is adapted to move between the ends of the split ring in directions towards and away from the interior of the split ring and which by means of a sliding cam or wedge action between the ends of the split ring and the ring expanding member, causes the split ring to expand into contact with and cause the braking of the wharve when the ring expanding member is moved in a direction towards the interior of the split ring and allows the split ring to contract away from the wharve when the ring expanding member is moved in the reverse direction. As shown, the split ring 1 rests upon spindle bolster 2 and inside the wharve 3 of spindle 4. Between the ends of the split ring 1 is situated the wedgeshaped end 16 of a plunger 15 which can be moved forward by one end of a bell crank lever 12 pivoted at 13 and having an actuating lever 10 attached thereto at 11. The lever 10 is foot-operated. An adjustable screw 19 is provided to prevent the end 16 of plunger 15 from leaving the gap between the ends of split ring 1. A second embodiment shows the plunger as operable by a straight knee-operated, lever. Specification 658,996 is referred to.
