[Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for controlling the feeding of a workpiece towards a cutting tool, such as a grinding wheel, comprises fluid-pressure-operated means for moving the workpiece towards the cutting tool and a spring acting in a direction contrary to the fluid-pressure-operated means and exerting a force opposing movement of the workpiece towards the cutting tool less than the feeding force applied by the fluid-pressureoperated means, the force exerted by the spring being adjustable to provide the desired resulting contact pressure between the workpiece and the cutting tool. The work-table 2 is supported on the machine frame 4 for movement toward and away from the grinding wheel 1. The table is carried by a base plate 7. A cylinder 8 is connected through a universal joint 9, 11 to the frame 4, and the plunger 13 of the cylinder is connected through an adjustable rod 14 and a yoke 16 to the plate 7. A shaft 21 is supported in bearing 19 in a plate 17 secured to the plate 7, the end 25 of the shaft passing through a bearing opening in the frame 4. A screw-threaded portion of the shaft carries a nut 27 and a spring 28 is disposed between the nut 27 and the frame. The shaft 21 is rotatable by a handwheel 22, rotation of the nut 27 being prevented by a slide rod 29 secured in the plate 17 and passing through an opening in the frame 4. A spring 34 is located between the frame 4 and a plate 33 on the rod 29.
