[Class 31 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A tool-supporting device in a punching press comprises a tool-head 1 mounted slidably on a pair of similar cylindrical members 5 fixed in the same angular direction to parallel shafts 3 which are journalled for partial rotation in unison in a fixed frame (not shown), so that the punch 11 may be displaced laterally between operations thereof. The head 1 is connected by a ball and socket joint 10 to a rod 6 which is reciprocated by an eccentric 8 attached to a shaft 9. The latter is geared at 20, 21 to a cam shaft 19 provided with a cam 18 whose hub may be secured adjustably thereto so as to vary the amount of throw imparted to follower rollers 17. Levers 16, connected to the shafts 3 and linked together by a ball-ended rod 22, are adapted to support the followers 17 and be rocked thereby in order to displace the punch along a circular path between two positions located on a line perpendicular to the feed direction of the work. piece 13 of sheet material. This displacement occurs on the upward stroke of the punch after the work-piece has been cleared.
