Abstract

669,752. Cutting cylindrical articles. CRAMP, K. G. Dec. 15, 1949 [March 4, 1949], No. 5977/49. Class 31.(i). [Also in Group XV] A machine for performing cutting operations on cylindrical articles comprises a reciprocating carriage and a pressure-plate between which the article is rolled and a cutting tool fixed to the carriage or to the plate whereby an article passing through the machine is cut to a pattern corresponding to that of the tool. As shown in Fig. 1 a carriage 14 is reciprocated by means of link 13 and gears 9, 10, the gear 9 being turned by a hand crank, not shown. The carriage,. which is mounted on rollers 17 running in tracks 20, supports a knife assembly which comprises knife-carrying blocks 21, 22, fixed to the carriage with the knife edges uppermost. When the carriage is at the left-hand end of its stroke a tube 27 is delivered to the top of the blocks 21, 22, and on return of the carriage is rolled between the knife blocks and a fixed pressureplate 23, causing the knives to cut through the tube which is subsequently ejected by a member 32 and falls on to a delivery guide 33. The machine described is designed to cut round tubes to form loose-leaf binders.
