Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A mechanism for cutting out, perforating or embossing a moving web W of sheet material between a fixed die 7 and a movable die 6 comprises a carriage 13 having separate guide rollers 9, 12 to tension the web before and after passage between the dies, means to move the carriage in synchronism with the movement of the movable die, and means to feed the web so as to apply tension by one guide roller and relax tension by the other roller, and thus temporarily arrest the motion of the web. As described, the web is pulled through the machine by rollers 8 . . . 12, and the upper movable die 6 is brought into engagement with the lower die by operation of eccentrics 15 carried on an overhead shaft 17 driven by gearing 19 ... 25 from a main shaft 18. In operation, the carriage is reciprocated by a crank-rod 26 received in a slotted drive plate 28, which is driven from the end of the upper shaft 17 via gears and a shaft 29 . . . 33. A screw 27 permits adjustment of the throw of the crank rod and amplitude of motion of the carriage. Waste pieces may be removed by a transverse conveyer from the space beneath the lower fixed die.
