1311362 Discontinuous wire stitching machine E V HENC 4 March 1970 [13 March 1969] 10295/70 Heading B4C [Also in Division B8] A machine for applying discontinuous wire stitches to overlapping portions of sheet material, e.g. a box blank comprises feed rollers 40, 50, 52 which are continuously driven by a variable speed motor M3 (Fig. 18) and each of which is provided with a resilient sleeve, the sleeves permitting momentary pausing of the box blank during application of a stitch by a stitching head assembly 20. Two delivery rollers 32, mounted in shaft 36, are also provided with resilient sleeves and co-act with a spring biased idler roller 33. The delivery rollers are continuously driven by a variable speed motor M2 (Fig. 18), and may feed the sheet material at the same or a faster rate than the feed rollers. The machine also comprises a guide shoe assembly 130 (Fig. 17), and adjustable side guide rails 160, 162 (Fig. 5). The guide shoe assembly 130 comprises a base-plate 136 mount ing an anvil 139 and integral with a centre plate 161 pivotally secured to bracket 132 and an upper plate 167 also secured to the bracket. Below the anvil, table 18 has an anvil support 140 (Fig. 11) adjustably mounted thereon. Manual rotation of knob 145 via worm 147, worm gear 149 and rack 143 moves the support 140. The side guide rails 160, 162 are secured to members 163, 164 respectively which are movable transverse to the blank feed direction by means of a reversible motor M4 driving screw shafts 182, 183 through solenoid clutches. Each rail can be moved in either direction upon actuation of switches 310, 312, 320, 322 (Fig. 18). The stitching head assembly comprises a variable speed motor M, driving a staple driving ram 274 via a solenoid clutch 264. A staple is formed from a piece of wire cut from a continuous wire by means (not shown). On each actuation of the ram a magnetic sensor 266 sends a pulse to a preset counter 268 (Fig. 18). After a preset number of staples has been driven the counter sends a pulse to a control circuit 260 to de-energize solenoid clutch 264. In operation with switches 220, 230, 232, 280 "on", counter 268 and speed controls 284, 294 preset, with speed of motor M1 preset, and with guide 160, 162 appropriately adjusted, a blank fed into the machine interrupts a light beam passing from a reflector 195 to a photo-cell 197 of detector 191 and a delay timer 240 is activated. After the timer turns out the stitcher head solenoid clutch 264 is actuated to commence stapling, the clutch being de-energized when the preset number of staples has been driven. Roller 40 may be replaced by a plurality of rollers on shaft 42, may be omitted or may not be driven.
