Abstract

1,185,256. Severing by tearing. G. ROSSI. 18 April, 1968, No. 18339/68. Heading B4B. An automatic tearing device for plastics film comprises a pair of feed rollers 1, 2 for feeding coupled cardboard sheets F in marginal superimposed relationship and connected to each other by a plastics film v, a pair of incision rollers 7, 8 the upper roller of which has spikes 9 and the lower roller of which has a rubber covering so as to incise the edge of the film v adjacent the superimposed margin N of the sheets F, and a pair of tearing rollers 4, 5 for dragging the plasticized coupled sheets with a greater translational speed than that of the rollers 1, 2 so as to cause a progressive divergent tearing of the film adjacent the margin N. The feed rollers and the incision rollers preferably form part of a continuous coupling machine. Preferably, one or both rollers 4, 5 are inclined to the axes of the other rollers. The roller 7 is driven from a shaft 35, Fig. 4, through two pairs of helical gear-wheels 50, 70 and 40, 90, the gear-wheel 50 being mounted on a slide 42 which is translatable, by means of a threaded bolt 19 and a hand wheel 3, so as to synchronize the roller 7 with the drive of the coupling machine without stopping the machine. The shaft 89 of the roller 7 is mounted in a slide 30 which is shiftable vertically, by means of a threaded bolt 47 and a hand wheel 14, so as to adjust the distance between the rollers 7 and 8. An end 11 of the roller 4 and that of roller 5 are mounted to revolve in a slide 56 which is shiftable vertically, by means of a threaded bolt and a hand wheel 33, so as to alter the angle of the axes of the rollers 4, 5 with respect to the other roller axes. The rollers 4, 5 are pressed against each other by means of two hand wheels 55 pressing bushes 60 upwardly by helical return springs 46. A slide grate (23), Fig. 6 (not shown), downstream of the rollers 7, 8 supports two coupled sheets 7 just before the tearing operation. The roller 4 is preferably formed by sections (4a), (4c) and (4e), Fig. 6.
