Abstract

485,460. Cutting sheet materials &c. into lengths. S. & S. CORRUGATED PAPER MACHINERY CO., Inc. Oct. 16, 1936, No. 28200. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1935. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a machine for cutting paper, corrugated board, sheet metal, wire, &c. into lengths, in which the material is fed at constant speed to a continuously rotating cutter which is driven at a variable speed through each cycle, means is provided for varying the period of the cycle to alter the length cut off while maintaining the speed of the cutter at the instant of cutting constant and equal to that of the material. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the mainshaft drives the feed rolls 1, 3 through sprocketgearing 6, 5, 4, and the cutter rolls 37, 42 through a Reeves drive 8, 8<1>, 9 and sprocketgearing 45, 44, 43<1>. The belt 8<1> is moved to vary the speed of the cutters during each cycle by a sliding fork 10 controlled by a cam 28 on the cutter shaft 29 acting through a roller 27 on an arm 24, shaft 23, arm 22, turnbuckle 17, arm 14, shaft 13, toothed sector 12 and rack 11. The arm 24 is adjustable along the cam 28 by a manually operable screw 34 to vary the period of a cycle. The cam 28 is of constant radius along the line of the cutter 38 to maintain the speed at the instant of cutting constant. In a modification, the cam controls a variable speed hydraulic pump-motor unit which varies the speed of the cutters. To assist the acceleration and deceleration of the cutters, the cutter shaft 152, Fig. 12, carries an eccentric 178 which during deceleration of the cutters rocks a lever 180 to compress a spring 185 to store energy which is released during subsequent acceleration of the cutters. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the main shaft 85 drives the feed rolls 93, 94 through gearing 86, 87 and sprocket-gearing 89, 90, 91, and the cutter rolls 120, 123 through sprocket-gearing 100, a gear 102 and one of a number of eccentric gears 103 of the same form as the cam 28, Fig. 1. The gear 102 is carried by a spring-pressed arm 98 mounted on a sleeve 97 keyed to and slidable along the shaft 85. A lug 115 co-operates with a slotted bar 117 to allow movement of the arm 98 along the shaft 85 by means of a member 108 only when the gear 102 meshes with the portions of the gears 103 which are all of the same radius. The member 108 is held in adjusted position by a pivoted latch 113. In a modification, the gears 103 are replaced by a cam as in Fig. 1 and the gear 102 by a belt running over pulleys on a pivoted arm similar to 98. Volume 44 of the Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers is referred to.
