MACHINE FOB'CUTTING AND FEEDIN GSHEE CONTINUOUS W; .4.
T8 OF DIFFERENT LWGTHS FROM A Application flle'd February 12, 1921. Serial No. MAM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State. of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines combination printing determined length and feeding them to the desired point, the arying of 1 inders 1 and 2 are for Cutting and Feeding Sheets of Difierent Lengths from a Continuous Web, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is' to provide novel means for cutting sheets of any prefrom a continuous web the lengths of the sheets cut and ed being accomplished without the necessity of changing the position or s eed of the cutting device and with but slig 1; changes in the machine.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which may be readily adjustable to cut sheets which are varied in length in multiples of a unit of measurement, such as an inch, and in fractionalparts of, said unit so that the very slightest changes in the length of the sheet may be provided for.
This machine may be used in connection with a printing press, a folding machine, aand folding machine, or wherever it is desired to out and feed .sheets of different lengths from a continuous web.
A practical embodiment of my invention represented in the accompanying drawin s, in which,
T ig. '1 represents the machine in side elevation.
Fig. 2 represents the machine in longitu dinal central section.
Fig. .3 represents an enlarged detail top plan view of the driving mechanism.
Fig. 4 represents a detail view of a portion of the driving mechanism.
Fig. 5 represents a detail view showing a plate substituted forone of the gears carried by the driving mechanism.
In the present instance sheet folding cylshown,-\their coacting folding devices being denoted by. 3 and 4. The folding cylinder 2 is shown as provided with a sheet gripping device 5- which is arranged to coast with a sheet gripping device 6 carried by the sheet feed cylinder 7.
A horizontally arranged sheet feed endfeed roller 9. Between shown as assing over the 11 for fee ing sheets to the stop 12 located adjacent to .trated comprises the rotary cutter 13-, the knlfe 14. of which is arranged to coact with an adjustable stationary the sheets from the conthe knife 15 on block 16 to sever tlnuous web.-
The: means for feeding the webto the sheet cutting device is herein shown as comprising the primar web feeding'roll l7 and the coacting'secon ary web feeding rolls 18,
ese rolls may have the nsual pressure rolls 20, 21, and 22. The web, not shown herein, passes from between the rolls 17 and 20 In -loop form into the pocket 23; from thence over the idler roll 24 to and around the drop rol121 and from thence around the rolls 18 and 19 over the guide 25 to the cuttin device.
n auxiliarysheet feed roll 26 is provlded in position to coact with the sheet feed roll 7.
The shaft of the sheet feed roll 7 is provided with a gear 27 which drives the gear 28 on the shaft of the feed roll 26, and it also drives the gear 29 on the shaft of the folding cylinder 2. This ar 29 drives the gear 30 of the folding cylinder 1.
The shaft 31 of the rotary member 13 of the sheet cutting device is driven from the shaft of the folding cylinder 2 by a chain 32 which passes around the s rocket 33 on the shaft of the folding cy inder 2 and around the sprocket 34 fast on the shaft 31.
and gears 36, 37, the
gear 37 being fast to the shaft of the the sprockets 33 and 34 the chain 32 also passes around the sprockets 38, 39, 40, 41.
worm gear and a sprocket 46 are carried by a sleeve 47 loose y mounted on the, cutter member shaft 31. A sprocket chain 48 passes around this sprocket 46 and also around the sprocket 49, mounted on the adjustable stud shaft 50. Meshinggearsjl,
to drive the endless sheet carrier 8 52 are mounted respectively on the shaft of the 'feedroll '19 andthe stud shaft 50.
A sprocket 53 and a gear 54 are carried by a sleeve loosely mounted on the cutter member shaft 31. A sprocket chain 56 leads from the sprocket 53 to a sprocket 57 on the shaft 58 of the web feed roll 18.
An arm 59 is fast on the cutter member shaft 31, which arm carries a longitudinal shaft 60 and a transverse shaft 61. The longitudinal shaft 60 is rovided with a worm 62 which meshes wit the worm gear 45, carried by the sleeve 47 loosely mounted on the cutter member shaft 31. It also carries a spiral gear 63 which meshes with a spiral gear 64 on the transverse shaft 61. This transverse shaft 61 is also provided with a removable gear 65 which meshes wlth the gear 54, carried by the sleeve 55;, loosely mounted on the shaft 31.
The web feed roll 17 is driven from the web feed roll 19 by a sprocket chain 66, which passes over a sprocket 67 on the shaft of the roll 17 and around a sprocket 68 on the shaft of the roll 19.
llhe relation of the drive for the several parts is such that the rotary cutter member 13 is rotated once for every two revolutions of the folding cylinders 1 and 2.
The stud shaft 50 is adjustable in an elongated slot 69 toward and away from the shaft of the feed roll 19 and the gear 52, which meshes with the gear 51 may be changed to vary the lengths of the sheets in multiples of a unit of measurement, as for instance in multiples of one inch-in length, by supplying the proper gear 52 and by changing the position of the stud shaft 50 so that the proper gear will mesh with the gear 51. In this condition where the lengths of the sheets are varied in multiples of one inch in length, the gear 65 is removed from the transverse stud shaft 61 and the shaft is held from rotating as it revolves around the shaft 31 by substituting for the gear 65, the plate 70. When the stud shaft 61 is held from rotating, the sprocket 46 makes even revolutions with the rotating cutter member, thus causing the feed roll 19 to travel a predetermined number of even inches.
Where it is desired to cut sheets that are varied in fractional parts of an inch in length, the plate 7 0 is removed and the gear 65 is replaced, thus permitting the shaft 61 to not only revolve around the shaft 31, but also to rotate on its own axis, thus causing the worm gear 45 to change its position relatively to the rotating cutter member by reason of the meshing of the worm gear 45 with the worm 62 and the meshing of the spiral gear 63 with the spiral gear 64 on the stud shaft 61.
As the Worm gear 45 and sprocket 46 move together. it will be seen that the sprocket 46 will not make even revolutions with the rotary cutter member but iscaused to drop back the required amount to produce the desired length of sheet. The amount of variation in fractional parts of an inch can be obtained by changing the relation of the gears 54, 65.
From the above description it will be seen that I have rovided very simple and efii cient means or causing sheets varying not only in multiples of a unit of measurement, but'also in fractional parts of said unit, to be cut and fed from a continuous web. This ability to vary the lengths of the sheets even in fractions of a unit of measurement ermits a very great saving in material w ere the sheets are to be cut very closely to the length desired and obviates the necessity of providing a machine specially built for any one predetermined length of sheet.
While I have shown the device as applied I to a folding machine, it is obvious that it may be used in connection with any desired mechanism where changes of folding lengths are to be cut and fed.
. It is also evident that various changes may be made in'the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish .to limit myself to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
