Abstract

785,548. Copy-milling. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1955 [Dec. 8, 1954], No. 35515/54. Class 83 (3). A milling-machine comprises means for automatically or manually varying the tilt of a pivoted cutter head D in correspondence with the angled contour required on a workpiece G as it is traversed past the cutter K. The head is pivoted on a slide C mounted on a vertically movable slide B, the slides being locked by levers e, g. The work G is carried on a table E by a jig F having a serrated face 4 held against a friction wheel b by rollers c. The wheel b is rotated by a motor or a handwheel x through epicyclic gearing H. The cutter K is rotated by an overhead motor through a flexible shaft z having a squared end s, Fig. 4, and is mounted on parts 2, 4<SP>1</SP> clamped together by a nut 23. The cutter shaft carries ball bearings 19 on eccentric bushes 6, 7 adjustable against pointers 21 and scales 10. In operation, the table E is fed up to the cutter so that faces 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> on the jig F contact the ball bearing rings 19 to cause the cutter spindle to tilt, the bushes 6, 7 being set for the required depth of cut. The jig is then fed across the table by the friction wheel b, the wheel and the rollers c allowing the jig to swivel as required. The feed speed can be controlled by a pedal or hand wheel y through a brake acting on a wheel of the epicyclic gear. The sliding head C may be moved during operation, and the tilt of the cutter may be controlled by a fluid-pressure device J.
