1431950 Constant depth Cutter OLIN CORP 6 June 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 27055/73 Heading B5L Apparatus for producing a cut of constant depth in a workpiece W, Fig. 6, comprises means 132 for contacting a surface of the workpiece including a planar portion 150 the plane of which contains a point P lying on the axis of a cutter 94 so that the cutter 94 projects a predetermined distance d beyond said plane, and second means upon which the means 132 is mounted for universal pivoting about the point P. As described, the means 132 is a member with a bore 144, Fig. 5, an aperture 146, and a partspherical surface 142 centred on the point P. The surface 142 is urged against a partspherical or frusto-conical surface 120 on a cap 118 by springs 134 so as to provide the universal pivot. The cap 118 is carried by a sleeve 119 threaded on a housing 82 for a motor driving the spindle 92 of the cutter 94. Opposite threads 121, 123 are provided between the sleeve 119 and the housing 82 and cap 118 respectively so that rotation of the sleeve varies the depth of cut d. The motor housing 82 is slidably mounted in a bearing 78 and is supported by springs 90. Compressed air supplied via conduits 102 and 124 provides air bearings for the housing 82, the rotary parts of the motor, and between the cap 118 and member 132 at the surface 120. The bearing 78 is supported on a plate 44, Fig. 1, which is secured to a bolster 30 which is vertically movable on rods 32 secured to a horizontally movable bolster 24. The workpiece is supported by clamps 20, 66 on blocks 16, 14 on a bolster 10 which is horizontally movable along rods 6. The workpiece is rctatable to present different faces to the cutting tool. The movements of the bolsters 10, 24 and 30, the rotation of the workpiece, the feed of compressed air to the conduits 102, 124, and the power drive for the cutting tool are controlled by a punched tape.
