Apparatus for cutting oil-grooves, ducts or channels in bearings and like machine parts comprises an adjustable, but normally stationary saddle, supported for sliding movement on a bed towards and away from a workpiecesupporting collet and a crank-operated tool slide mounted on a cross-slide on the saddle. The saddle 3, Fig. 1, is carried on a pair of round guide bars 2 and may be clamped in adjusted position by a hand lever 6, Fig. 2. A cross-slide 8 mounted on similar guide bars 8a is adjustable by a screw 9 the nut for which is secured to an adjustable member 33 with a pivot 32 for a cam-operated bar 30 which is attached to the cross-slide by a pin and bracket 34a, 34. The latter move the cross-slide to give tool-relief on the return stroke (when required) through a cam 28. This cam forms part of an adjustable crank and connecting rod device 16, 13, respectively which reciprocates a tap or tool slide 11 in a direction parallel to the machine axis. The crank-disc 17 is driven through universal joints 21, Fig. 1, and a splined shaft 20 from a self-containined motor which also drives the work-spindle at a proportionate speed to the reciprocations of the tool-slide. Means are also described for oscillating the tool so that it may be presented to the work at the correct cutting angle. Planing. The work may be held stationary and longitudinal oilways cut therein by the reciprocating tool.
