Abstract

1392988 Expandable winding drum DEMAG AG 28 April 1972 [28 April 1971] 19861/72 Heading D1J [Also in Division F2] The radially movable segments of an expandable winding drum are moved by a member extending axially of the drum and passing through a piston-cylinder unit, the piston including a sleeve surrounding the member and being locked to the member outside the cylinder. As shown, Fig. 1, shaft 3 and mandrel 4 are rotatable by rack and pinion 2, and segments 8 are moved lengthwise by rod 7 so that cooperating inclined segment and mandrel surfaces produce radial segment movement. The rod is moved by hydraulic piston-cylinder unit 9 attached to the mandrel. Sleeve 14 of piston 13 is clamped between a rod shoulder and nut 17. Hydraulic fluid is fed to the cylinder by a connector whose rotary part 19 is mounted by bracket 20 on unit 9. Alternatively, Fig. 2, mandrel 4 is rotated with shaft 3 and is movable axially by shaft-mounted unit 9 to radially move segments 8. In either embodiment the connector may have its rotary part mounted on the rod or mandrel so that it abuts sleeve 14, fluid being fed to either piston side through ducts in the sleeve. Further, in any of these embodiments the cylinder may contain a second piston serving as an adjustable stop for piston 13. The nut may consist of two semi-cylindrical halves, or may be replaced by a bolt or a cotter pin.
