Class 100(1) [Also in Group XXII] A coiling or uncoiling apparatus for metal strip includes a radially expandable drum consisting of radially movable segments and power-operated expanding means comprising a longitudinally displaceably actuating member, extending through the hollow shaft of the drum, and actuated by reciprocating means disposed between a non-rotating member axially fixed relative to the shaft and a non-rotating member axially fixed relative to the actuating member. A coiling drum 10 has segments 12 carried on a main shaft 14 rotated by a gear 15 and expanded against springs 16 by wedge-sectioned bars 18 between the segments. The bars 18 are moved outwardly by axial movement of cam bars 24 carried by an actuating rod 26 extending through the main shaft 14, inclined surfaces 22 on the cam bars 24 engaging inclined surfaces 20 on the bars 18. A nut 67 on the shaft 14 is engaged by the ends of the bars 18 to take up longitudinal force exerted thereon from the rod 26. The rod 26 is reciprocated by four sets of toggle levers 32 spaced therearound. The outer ends of the levers are pivoted at 50, 52 to thrust blocks 54, 56 respectively, the block 54 being rotatably mounted but not allowed axial movement on an extension 58 of the shaft 14 and the block 52 being similarly mounted on'the rod 26. The block 56 is also guided on pins 76 extending from the block 54 and the assembly is held against rotation by adjustable brackets 78 engaging the pins. The inner ends of one set of toggle levers 32 are pivoted at 34 to a piston 40 of a hydraulic motor 36 and the inner ends of an opposing set of levers 32 are pivoted at 34 to the cylinder of that motor 36. Another hydraulic motor 36 actuates the other pair of toggle lever sets. Two toggle sets only and one motor may be provided. One of the motors 36 may be connected to a pressure gauge whereby counterpressure on the drum due to shrinkage of the coil may be measured. Pressure relief means may also be connected into the hydraulic system.
