Abstract

1,233,345. Grinding. FUJIKI KOUSAN K.K. 22 Jan., 1970, No. 3113/70. Heading B3D. An internal grinder for a steel ingot mould 41 comprises a grinding wheel 1 rotatably mounted at the end of an elongated arm 4, drive means 7 for the grinding wheel, a head 11 supporting the arm for rotation about its longitudinal axis, means 9 for rotating the arm about the longitudinal axis, means 14 below the arm to adjust the angle of elevation of the arm, a copying plate 27 receiving an end of the adjusting means and pivoted at one end 28 on a carriage 21 so as to be angularly adjustable in a vertical plane, the head being reciprocatable along the carriage which is angularly-adjustably mounted on a truck 32. The arm is of hollow elliptical cross-section and a drive belt 3 passes within the arm between a drive motor 7 at one end and the spindle 2 of the grinding wheel at the other. The arm is rotatably supported in a cylindrical bearing 5 and is rotatable through 180 degrees about the axis of the bearing by gearing 10, 10a and a hand wheel 8 to position the grinding wheel for operation on the left- or right-hand side of the ingot mould 41. The sleeve is supported by a pivot on the head 11 and is adjustable about the pivot by a hand wheel 13 rotating a gear to adjust the distance between a cap engaging the sleeve and a roller engaging the copying plate 27. The plate is mounted at its forward end on a pivot 28 on the carriage 21 and at its rearward rests on a tapered collet adjustable by a lead screw connected to a hand wheel 29 to adjust the angle of the plate so that the grinding wheel follows the contour of the mould as the head 11, which is supported by wheels 12 on tracks on the carriage, is reciprocated between limits determined by dogs 40, 40a acting on a limit switch 39 controlling a motor 18 driving the wheels 12a of the head. The carriage 21 is mounted on a pivot 22 on the truck 32 and is adjustable about the pivot to align the reciprocation of the head with the side walls of the mould by a hand wheel 23 connected by gearing 24, 24a and a spindle to the carriage. The truck is movable along rails 38 by rotation of a hand wheel 35 connected to a spur gear 37 fixed to one of the axles 34 of the truck.
