[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] In a planing machine for work-pieces of large dimensions, the saddle C for the cutting tool A is supported to move with an alternating rectilinear motion over the surface of a workpiece carried by a table J, the saddle sliding on a track member D which is mounted on supports E which are rotatable through 90 degrees on each side of the vertical about cylindrical members F by means of rack-and-screw mechanism, the members F being mounted on columns G with respect to which a carriage I is vertically adjustable. The work-table J and the slide B for the cutting tool are adjustable transversely of the carriage and saddle respectively. The saddle may be moved by means of a hydraulic piston and cylinder, the latter being mounted on the track member D, or by means of an electric motor and driving gear mounted on the track member or on the base of the machine in which latter case a transmission by spur gearing to the track member may be employed. Several track members may be provided. The cutting tool may be replaced by a grinding-wheel which is driven by an electric motor.
