Abstract

679,272. Grinding turbine blades. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 25, 1951 [Feb. 1, 1950], No. 2673/50. Class 60. A machine for grinding the convex surface of a turbine or like blade comprises a grinding wheel 22 of sufficient width to render traverse unnecessary, a rotatable arbor 13 to support the blade with its spanwise axis approximately parallel to the grinding wheel axis, and separate cam and follower devices for each end of the carrier under control of which the ends of the latter are reciprocated in a plane parallel to the plane containing the axes of the grinding wheel and carrier and also in a plane at right angles thereto. Two cams 25, 26 held in contact with fixed roller followers 27, 29 by springs 31 are provided at each end of the arbor 13 which is driven through a universal joint 21 or a flexible shaft drive from an electric motor and a reduction gear (not shown). The cam 25 produces the movement in the first-mentioned plane while the cam 26 produces the movement in the second-mentioned plane. Clamps 15 hold the blades on the arbor and the diameter of the grinding wheel may be about ten times that of the circle swept out by the blades. The springs 31 are connected to the arbor through freelymounted collars 32. According to the Provisional Specification, the arbor may be journalled at each end in pedestals adapted to slide transversely to the grinding wheel axis, the cams 26 being omitted. This specification also states that the cam profiles may be determined by rotating a master blade in contact with a dummy grinding wheel.
