Abstract
800,764. Grinding. GEAR GRINDING MACHINE CO. Feb. 1, 1957 [June 18, 1956], No. 3664/57. Class 60. Means facilitating the positioning on a workholder A for a grinding operation of a gear wheel C or other workpiece having a series of spaced projections subject to distortion during previous heat treatment, comprises a fixture E for receiving the workholder, a series of fingers F<SP>1</SP> which extend into the spaces between the projections of a workpiece freely mounted on the workholder and have the same relative spacing as that desired between the projections of the finished workpiece, a second similar series of fingers G<SP>1</SP> also similarly engaging said spaces, means for moving the two series of fingers oppositely on the fixture with the workholder held in fixed position by an indexing portion I, whereby finger contact will be made with only those projections of maximum distortion in opposite directions and the workpiece adjusted thereby on the workholder, and means A<SP>2</SP> for locking the workpiece in such position on the workholder. The workpiece C is mounted on one end of an arbor A which is disposed in the fixture E and has at its other end a removably-securable indexing arm I carrying at its outer radial end a fixed screw I<SP>2</SP> and a screw I<SP>3</SP> for clamping the arm to a pin K secured to the fixture E. Two rings F, G, which carry the fingers F<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>1</SP> engaging in the spaces between the projections on the workpiece, are mounted in the fixture E and have obliquely-arranged slots M, M<SP>1</SP> engaging pins L<SP>2</SP>, L<SP>3</SP> secured to a disc carried on a shaft L. Rotation of the shaft rotates the rings F, G in opposite directions until the fingers contact the projections of maximum distortion in both directions on the workpiece, whereupon the workpiece is clamped to the arbor by the nut A<SP>2</SP>. The index arm I is then removed from the arbor, the arbor removed from the fixture and the index arm replaced to engage a pin similar to the pin K on a machine for form grinding the projections ; a V-shaped portion on the arbor provides means for correctly replacing the arm on the arbor.
