Disk apparatus.-A machine for grinding and polishing pearl buttons and other small articles comprises a revolving table a running on ball bearings on the frame c and forming a carrier for a number of separately rotated verticallyarranged spindles g. These spindles are fitted with expanding chucks or work - holders g<5> adapted automatically to grip the work during the part of the revolution of the table that the chuck is passing under a rotating grinding-disk v mounted in bearings v<2> on the frame. Each spindle is supported in bearings g<3>, g<4> on a slide h mounted on a saddle i carried by the table, and each carries a pinion g<10> engaging a rotary or fixed annular gear-wheel j, whereby the spindles are rotated. The table a has a projecting sleeve a<2> supported by a ball a<4> on a central shaft f and adapted to be driven by a bevel - wheel a<3>. This bevel - wheel and the bevel - wheel m<2>, formed on the annular spur-wheel, are driven through gearing from belt - pulleys s. The expanding chucks have each a chuck - rod g<6> and spring g<7>, the chuck-rods being acted on by a fixed cam g<8> carried by a part c<2> of the frame, so that when the rods rest on the cam, the chucks are open and the articles can be placed therein, but when the rods slide over the cam end g<9>, the chuck closes on to the article. The grinding-wheel bearings are supported on a saddle v<4> adjustable in a slide v<5>, and provision may be made to allow the face of the grinding-wheel to be canted. More than one grinding-disk may be used; friction gearing may be used for rotating the spindles.
