Abstract

17,378. Lake, W. E., [Gail, J. F.]. July 26. Disk and wheel appparatus. - A machine for buffing bedstead-mounts, &c. is constructed with a number of buffing-wheels against each of which the mount is brought in turn ; the mounts are carried on revolving and oscillating spindles on an intermittently-rotating table. In the machine shown, there are four spindles 57 on the table 20, and, while three of them are rotating and oscillating the mounts in contact with the wheels 27, 28, 29, the fourth is free to be rotated reversely to unscrew the finished mount, which is grasped by the operator, and to be rotated normally again to screw on another mount. Means are provided for automatically supplying abrading-material to the wheels, such means being equipped with a device to compensate for wear of the wheels. The table 20 is mounted on ball bearings on a standard 24 and connected with a shaft passing down through the standard 24 and having fixed at its lower end the intermittently-rotating member of a fourarmed Geneva-stop movement. The spindles 57, upon which are screwed the mounts 60, are supported in arms 49 projecting from spindles 47 which are fitted in radial slides on the table. The spindles are driven by pinions 61 gearing with pinions 63 having jointed connexion with rotating rods 67. As each slide comes into position, a roller 150 mounted thereon is engaged by an arm 149 or 167 which is operated by cams from a shaft 72 to thrust the slide forward and move the mount into contact with the buffing-wheel ; at the same time arms 194 actuated from other cams on the shaft 72 move the arms 56, which, by the gear segments 55 and pinions 46, rotate the spindles 47 to swing the mount and present all its surfaces to the buffing - wheel. The rods 67 are coupled to shafts mounted eccentrically in bearings 106, Fig. 11, and carrying friction pulleys 110, which are pressed against the central driving- drum 103 by springs 113 acting upon the eccentrics 107. The spider 104, carrying the friction pulleys and drum, is mounted on an extension of the intermittently rotating shaft carrying the table 20, and at one point in the rotation of the table the arm 107<a> engages with a roller 145 and is pressed inwards to disengage its friction pulley from the central drum and bring it into contact with a friction drum 118 mounted on a shaft carrying a bevel friction wheel 119, which is adjacent to frictionwheels 124, 125, mounted on a shaft 120. This movement stops the rotation of the mount, which is in front of the machine, and near the operator, who seizes it in his hand, and, by pressing one of the pedals 138, 142, rotates through the medium of one of the cords 134, 135, the lever 133 pivoted at 129 and carrying a tongue 128, which moves the shaft 120 to engage one of the wheels 124, 125 with the wheel 119 and rotate the mount-carrying spindle to unscrew the mount ; the operator then presses the other pedal and rotates the spindle in the opposite direction to screw on another mount. Adjacent to each buffing-wheel, and mounted on the same supports are guides 215 for carriages carrying blocks of abrading-material 219, Fig. 13. Each carriage has a threaded extension through which passes a screw 223 which is intermittently rotated through ratchet mechanism to advance the abrading-material in the carriage by an arm 230 engaging on movement of the abradant carriage a cam-surface 233 on the supporting-bracket. The carriage is periodically advanced to apply abrading- material to the wheel by a chain 239 operated by a lever and a cam on the cam-shaft, and is returned by the spring 245<a>. Each rotation of the screw 223 to advance the abrading-material in the carriage also causes a rotation of the pinion 242 mounted on a ratchet on the screw 237 and thereby retracts the block 238 slightly; to this block is attached the chain 239 and as a result the carriage is moved forward to a slightly greater extent at each operation, thus compensating for the wear of the buffing-wheel.
