Abstract

709,833. Surfacing glass. GLACERIES DE LA SAMBRE SOC. ANON. Nov. 20, 1951 [Dec. 14, 1950], No. 27233/51. Class 60 An endless sheet of glass 8 is continuously traversed through a glass surfacing apparatus by arranging some of the tools 3 to project beyond the edges of the sheet and rotating the tools projecting beyond opposite edges in opposite directions. In one embodiment, four tools are supported on a transverse beam 1 and the outer tools are rotated through variable speed gearing by motors which also drive the intermediate tools 5 through a common shaft. Alternatively, each tool may be driven by a separate motor. Where both sides of the sheet are treated simultaneously by opposed pairs of beams reciprocated in anti-phase, the end tools of each beam travel between a projecting position and one where they are completely in contact with the glass. If single disc tools having a diameter substantially equal to the width of the sheet are used, the glass is traversed by small marginal tools inserted between them.
