782,850. Grinding and polishing glass and other surfaces. GLACERIES DE LA SAMBRE SOC. ANON. Jan. 27,1955 [Jan. 27, 1954], No. 2548/55. Addition to 755,832. Class 60. [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXVII] Apparatus for grinding or polishing a moving sheet 5 of glass or similar material comprises rotary tools 1 mounted on beams 3 which are supported on carriages for reciprocation across the sheet 5, a mechansim for reciprocating the beams and a second mechanism by means of which the velocity of the beams is maintained constant during a portion of the reciprocation, one of the mechanisms being a crank and connecting rod. The reciprocation may be produced by a connecting rod and crank driven by an electric motor 10 having a variable resistor 32 in its field circuit. The slider 31 of the resistor 32 is actuated through gearing 27 ... 30 by a cam 23 mounted on the crank shaft so that the speed of the motor is varied to produce a reciprocating movement of substantially uniform velocity. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5, a first reciprocating movement is imparted to a carriage 37 by a crank and connecting rod 35, 36 while a second reciprocating movement is imparted to a carriage 38 by a second crank and connecting rod 39, 40 so that the carriage 38 which is connected to the toolsupporting beam 3, reciprocates with substantially uniform velocity. The crank 39 may be actuated by a motor with a reduction gear or, as shown, through gearing 43 .... 48 from one of the tool shafts 42. The connecting rods may be made in two parts (see Group XXVI) to permit staggering of the beams in relation to one another to secure a uniform grinding or polishing action over the width of the glass. The upper and lower beams of each pair may also be staggered in relation to each other to reduce variations in the thickness of the glass.
