Abstract

726,204. Grinding and polishing. BALZ, W.G. Jan. 8, 1953, No. 619/53. Class 60. Parts 6, such as automobile door handles, are finished by submerging them in an abrasive mass S and reciprocating them through the mass with strokes of substantial length but of insufficient length to induce substantial travel of the abrasive mass. The parts are mounted in chucks on a series of arms 9 secured to an annular support 8 in sliding and driven engagement with a shaft 15 driven through gears 17 and a chain 16 from an electric motor 3 so that it makes an oscillating or reciprocating movement which preferably extends through less than a complete revolution in each direction. The support 8 can be raised by tackle 19 to permit inspection or removal of the parts 6. An auxiliary drive may be provided to rotate the chucks on the arms 9 as the support 8 is oscillated. The abrasive mass consists of irregular mineral fragments varying in maximum dimension from <SP>1</SP>/ 64 to 2¢ inches and submerged in a liquid having lubricating and cleaning qualities.
