903,627. Grinding. SOC. DES LUNETIERS COTTET, POICHET, TAGNON & CIE. April 4, 1960 [April 7, 1959], No. 11838/60. Class 60. A machine for honing a curved surface A comprises a tool F having a small area relative to the surface to be honed and driven with a rapid periodic abrasive motion, a housing U for the tool resting under its own weight and via the tool on the surface to be honed which surface is fixed to a mount B rotatable about a vertical axis, the tool being movable at a slow rate transversely of the axis. The curved surface may be on a metal, ceramic or glass piece A secured to the mount B which is rotatable by gearing C, D and a belt-driven pulley E and is vertically adjustable so that the mean centre of curvature L of the surface to be honed is in the same horizontal plane as the axis of rotation u, u<SP>1</SP> of a chassis I connected by pairs of links J, K to the housing U for the spindle H of the tool which is rotated by a flexible shaft S from a motor R mounted on the chassis. The tool F is given a rapid abrading motion by an eccentric pin G which is driven by the spindle and is axially-adjustable to bring the links J, K approximately horizontal. The tool is slowly traversed across the surface while driven with the rapid abrading motion by the action of a follower M carried by the chassis I engaging a cam N chain driven through a reduction gearbox O. The links J, K may be of equal or different lengths and the connections of the links to the housing and chassis arranged so that the links may or may not be parallel. The pivot u, u<SP>1</SP> of the chassis may be between or above the points of connection between the links and chassis. The various arrangements permit surfaces which may be convex or concave and may or may not be spherical to be honed. Abrasive is supplied to the tool through a pipe W and may be collected in a bowl X and fed to the tool by a pump. The machine may impart a vibratory motion to the tool in place of the circular abrading motion.
