Abstract
1363957 Grinding lenses COBURN OPTICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 11 April 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 16640/72 Heading B3D An apparatus for finishing the surface of a lens mounted on a lens block B comprises a generally vertically disposed shaft 40 having an upper end connected to the lens block or a lapping tool L having a polishing surface of selected base and cross curves, first means 22 to rotate the shaft about its axis at a first speed, second means 34 to move the axis in a cylindrical path at a speed substantially less than the first speed, thrust means 108 for maintaining the lens surface to be ground against the polishing surface, and fourth means 131 to move the third means in a plane parallel to a tangent to the base curve. As described, the apparatus has a pair of lapping units which are mounted on a framework 12. Each unit has a shaft 40, 40<SP>1</SP> rotatably mounted in an eccentric 34, in turn, rotatably mounted in a bracket 30, 30<SP>1</SP> on the framework. The shafts 40, 40<SP>1</SP> are driven by belts 50, 52 from a motor 22, and the eccentrics 34 are driven by belts 64, 64<SP>1</SP> from a motor 54 at a much slower speed than that of the shafts. The upper ends of the shafts have plates 68, 68<SP>1</SP> provided with drive pins 70, 70<SP>1</SP> connected by spherical bushings 74, 74<SP>1</SP> to the lower ends of rods 72, 721 mounted in a gimbals 84, 84<SP>1</SP> in brackets 80, 80<SP>1</SP> on the framework, the gimbals preventing the rods from rotating about their own axes. The upper ends of the rods 72, 72<SP>1</SP> have carriers 76, 76<SP>1</SP> for laps L which are engaged by lenses 78 secured to blocks B formed with pin-receiving holes. The holes are engaged by pina 103, 105, 103<SP>1</SP>, 105<SP>1</SP> carried by arms 102 secured to shafts 104, 104<SP>1</SP> rotatably mounted in T-shaped housings 108, 108<SP>1</SP> having sleeves 109, 109<SP>1</SP> fixed to shafts 110, 110<SP>1</SP> pivotable and slidable in bearings 116, 118. Ball joints 124, 124<SP>1</SP> connect the other end of rods 104, 104<SP>1</SP> to pneumatic piston-and-cylinder devices 120 which act to rock the housings 108, 108<SP>1</SP> so that the lenses are urged against the laps. A motor 131 has an output shaft 132 secured to a disc 136 having a pin 139 connected by linkages 142, 142<SP>1</SP> to the shafts 110, 110<SP>1</SP> whereby they and hence the lenses, are given a reciprocating motion.
