704,748. Stone-cutting machines. BATH & PORTLAND STONE FIRMS, Ltd., and KELLY, G. E. April 26, 1951 [Feb. 6, 1950], No. 3058/50. Class 124 In a stone-cutting machine a power-driven carriage mounted for movement to and fro along a track 3 carries a power driving means 6 and a horizontal transverse drive shaft 11 for a diamond saw or like circular cutting-tool 12, the driving means driving, through suitable gearing, both the carriage and the cutting-tool so that the latter may operate irrespective of the direction of travel of the carriage. The power driving means may be an electric motor or an internal combustion engine and it may drive the shaft 11 through a flexible drive such as a chain or V-belt 9 with or without reduction gearing, whilst it may drive the carriage wheels 2 by a chain-and-sprocket or by a pulley-and-belt drive. It may be provided with an adjustable friction clutch and an automatic solenoid or other brake. The shaft 11 may carry a cutting tool on each of its ends, in which case it may be mounted above the carriage or comprise two half-shafts underslung with respect to a carriage moving along an elevated track under and across which the stone may be traversed. The carriage may include a table 4 which is dove-tailed as at 5 to allow traverse of the cutting-tool, and it may carry a pump driven by an independent motor for supplying cooling liquid to the tool 12, for example in the manner described in Specification 692,426.
