An electrical drive for a four-roller mill having two co-acting pairs of rollers of which the slow rollers are driven from the opposite fast rollers or vice versa is characterised in that the electrical driving power means, comprising one or more power sources, has two power take-offs, in an invariable speed relationship with each other, for the two rollers which are first in order of drive from the power means. In the form shown in Fig. 2, in which the fast and slow rollers are driven in the usual manner from the motors 1, 2, the motors are provided with additional pulleys 12, 13 which are connected by means of open and crossed belts 14, 15 respectively to pulleys 7, 8 on a countershaft 9. In a modification, Fig. 3, (not shown) inwardly directed stub shafts of the motors are connected together by means of spur gears or the like reversing gearing. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a single motor is provided at one side of the mill and drives one roller of a pair directly and the corresponding roller of the other pair through spur gears or the like. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), two motors are located at one side of and below the mill, the motors having outwardly directed stub shafts which drive the rollers and inwardly directed stub shafts connected by spur gears or the like. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the outwardly directed stub shaft of a motor and the outer end of a parallel shaft drive the rollers while an inwardly directed stub shaft of the motor and the inner end of the parallel shaft are connected by spur gears or the like. In a still further modification, Fig. 7, the plane containing the two driving shafts of the rollers is inclined to the horizontal and the motor 1 is arranged on a swingable arm 16 which is adjustable so that in the mean position the two driving belts can be tensioned equally.
