Abstract

1358796 Straightening machines I UNGERER 26 Jan 1972 [13 May 1971] 3633/72 Heading B3E A metal strip straightening machine has an even number of rolls between which the strip is fed in an S-shaped path and the rolls are driven from a common drive through differential gears each arranged to drive a pair of rolls and the differential gears are in turn driven in pairs by one or more further differential gears. In one embodiment there are four rolls 22, 27, 40, 45 driven in pairs by differentials gears 12, 30 which are driven by a common differential gear 1 from a common drive 8. The differential gears 12, 30 each drive adjacent rolls in opposite directions since their output shafts 13, 14, 31, 32 are connected to the roll shafts 21, 26, 39, 44 through bevel gears 18, 19 &c. In a second similar embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), one roll shaft (59) (61) of each roll pair is driven directly by the pair of differential gear (12<SP>1</SP>) (30<SP>1</SP>) and the other roll shaft is driven through spur gears (64) -(67). The straightening machine is used between backstay and traction S-roll stands of a stretch straightening machine.
