Abstract

937,801. Combined scoring and cutting machines. KOPPERS CO. Inc. April 30, 1962 [April 30, 1961], No. 16422/62. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A machine for cutting and scoring a travelling web 16 of box blank material comprises a pair of power driven shafts 10, 11, a male cutting element 17 fixed to the shaft 10, a female cutting element 18 fixed to the shaft 11, male scoring heads 19 mounted on the shaft 10 and having scoring beads 29, and female scoring heads 21 fixed to the shaft 11, the portions of the male scoring heads carrying the scoring beads being freely rotatable in relation to the shaft 10. As shown in Fig. 1, three pairs of shafts 10, 11 are mounted in a rotatable frame having end members 12, 13 and any one pair can be brought into operative position by rotation of the frame. The shafts 10, 11 in operative position are driven through gears 23, 24, 26 from a shaft 22, the shaft 11 rotating at such a speed that the peripheral speeds of the heads 18, 21 is equal to the linear speed of the web 16 and the shaft 10 rotating at twice the speed of the shaft 11 in order that the cutting heads may have a peripheral speed which is double the linear speed of the web and may thereby operate with maximum efficiency. Each of the male scoring heads 19 comprises ring portions 31, 32, the former being fixed to and rotating with the shaft 10 and the latter, which carries the bead 29, being rotatably mounted thereon by means of ball bearings 38 so that when in contact with the web 16 the bead 29 has a peripheral speed equal to the linear speed of the web.
