. 4 Claims. My invention relates to novel'apparatus for Y andmethods of manufacture of paper,` orcardcard boxes, corrugated or otherwise," and more particularly, .to novel apparatus for and methods L5, of manufacture ofsamples of paper or cardboard boxes. v f The object of my invention isV to provide a single machinewhich will `do the work of'scoring and trimming, slicing, cutting and blocking required in the manufacture of cardboard boxes vwhich in the past required several machines `to accomplish. Y
Another object yof my invention isV to provide means for performing the above-mentionedoper- 1.5, ations by the use of power driven machinery and on a mass production basis as againstfthe hand operate-d mechanisms that were used in the past in the manufacture of sample cardboard boxes.V
Another objectof my invention is to provide motive powers may be connected with or detached from any one or several mechanisms in such a manner as'to Vmake the various mechanisms operate either singly Vor` jointly or in any desired combination whatsoever. There are other objects of my invention `which together with the foregoingV will appear inthe detailed description which is to follow in connecwhich: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal perspective View of a preferred'type of this machine."V
Figure A 2 shows- 'a longitudinalV cross-sectional View of themachine, its various parts, and their location with respect to each other; Fig. 3 is an end View in. elevation lookingfat 35 the left of Figure l, showing the circular scorers and trimmers.
' Figures 4 and 5 show boardv blanks and the may be scored,V creased ilar machines. ReferringV now vmore particularly tol Fig. 1,- a metal frameV serves asa support for the various mechanisms as well as for the table topl 2 upon are processed. l f In carrying out my invention in connection with a blank such as shown in Figure 4,V I first trim the'edges 3 and tewith shears 5 (Figure 1). These shears 5 are manipulated by hand, a blade 6 which .is 'secured Yto a handle 'I byV means of a number of bolts Il, and iwhich can be removed from time to time for the purpose of sharpening. The otherrblade of the shears consists of a steel bar I2 (Figure 2) Vwhich to top 2 of the table and -various froms of cardmanner in which fthey and cut Vby this and sim- (chier-11| g forms, a Vsharp edge I3. As the blank is laid on table; 2 it is gauged by means of scale I4 and held ini place underbar |5 which is pivoted at hingel'and travels in yoke I9.
VWhen necessary, scaley |4 can be extended beyond the table through extensionsV ifi and I8 whichVV `can be fed Vout from under the table through hand wheel 2|. This wheel turns rod 22 on which are mounted geared wheelsY 23, 24 at the bottom of exwhich engage similar teeth tension bars I1 and I8 and propel them forward. Bars I1 and |8'are joined by angle 25 which acts as a stop for they blank. To facilitate the operation of the shears,ra counterweight 26 is placed on the far end of Vthe shears beyondthe pin 27. Edge 4 of theblank is trimmed in the same manner as was edge 3; after which theblank is ready for the body scores'l Shown in Figure 4. The body score is made through creaser or scorer 3.2,v which operates through eccentric straps33 pivoted on shaft 34.4
VOn one end of shaft 34 is mounted wheel 35 'which'V drivesY member 4| vertically in slot 42 formed by the standards or guides 43. Member Y 4| terminates in a rounded blade 44.
When Ybody scores 3| are to be made,V the blank is so adjusted along scale I4 that blade-44 will be exactly above the line to be scored. A slight pressure of the foot on pedal 45 will operate rod 46, which actsY upon clutch (not shown) thus connecting eccentricstraps 33 with the Vmotive power. Scorer 32 comes 'down upon the table and the cardboard is scored between blade 44 and groove 47 in top -2 of the table.
The blank is now moved farther to the left Aand fed under the rotary scorers and trimmers whose function itis to trim the edges 5| and 52 of the blank in Figure 4 and to produce the ap'scores 53 and 54. Y l
The rotary scorers and trimmers consist of an upper shaft 55 and a lower shaft 56. Upon these shaftsV are adjustably mounted upper trimming knives 511 and lower trimming knives 6|, also upper scoring wheels 52 and lower scoring wheels 63.
The lower shaft 55 derives its motion from pulley 64 (Figure 2) which is driven by belt 65 riding on pulley 56 whichin turn derives its motion from motor 36 through pulleys 35 and 3T and belt 33.
, Wheny necessary, shaft 56 ,can'be disconnected from the source of power by means of hand operatedclutch handle' 61 controlling a suitable clutch in the usual; manner (clutch not shown).
It can also be operated by hand through wheel 68.
Shaft 5E imparts motion to shaft 55 through a pair of sets of gears located on the shaft at frame 1I. When it is required to disengage the upper shaft 55 from the lower shaft 56, a handle 12, Fig. 1, is turned one quarter of a revolution. This handle is rigidly connected to a rod 13 resting in bearings 14. Securely connected to rod 13 are cams 15, which press upon the top of the frame 1I when handle 12 (Figure 1) is turned and lifts shaft 55 a distance sufficient to disengage it from shaft 56, thus permitting the blank to be moved about freely between the rollers without fear of being scored or trimmed.
The next process is that of blocking or angle cuts. For this purpose, two separate motors 16 and 11 are provided. Motor 16 is mounted on adjustable platform 8| which is fastened to frame I. Motor 16 is connected to a gear 82, (Figure 1) from which projects an eccentrically located pin 83. Pivoted on pin 83 is one end of an arm S4, the other end of which slides in a vertical groove in guide 85, and is at the same time connected to a triangular cutting block 86 to which it imparts up and down motion. The sharp edge of the cutting block meets a similarly shaped cutting edge 81 on the level of the table, and the two effect a 90 degree cut-out of any desired depth in the blank. Gear 82 is connected to and disconnected from motor 16 by means of a clutch 8B which is operated by the pressure of a foot on pedal 89.
When a rectangular cut-out is required, the motor 11 is used. The operation of motor 11 is similar' to that of motor 16. It is mounted on an adjustable platform 9|, (Figure 2) which fastens to frame l Motor 11 is geared to 92 from which projects an ecoentrically located pin 93. Pivoted on pin 93 is one end of arm 94 and is at the same time connected to` a rectangular cutting block 96 to which it imparts up and down motion. They edge of cutting block 95 meets a similarly shaped cutting edge 91 on the level of the tableand the two effect a rectangular cutout of desired length and breadth in the blank. The connection of wheel 92 to motor 11 is controlled by means of clutch 98 which is operated by the pressure of a foot on pedal 99.
For convenience in handling the blank during the blocking process, a panel I0! forming part of top 2 of the table has been placed on hinges H52 in order that it may be dropped, and the operator be allowed to work within closer range of the cutting blocks 85 and 96.
Although I have disclosed for purposes of illustration one form of my invention, it will be obvious that it may take other forms than that herein described, and I do not intend to be limited except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
