Abstract

1358936 Stretch-straightening apparatus I UNGERER 26 Jan 1972 [14 April 1971] 3632/72 Heading B3E A stretch-straightening apparatus comprises an S-roll backstay stand and an S-roll traction stand and the rolls of each stand have the same diameter and every roll except one of each stand is driven by a differential gear 32 whose output speed is variable by a variable gear 36 in the drive to the pinion housing of the differential gear. In one embodiment the first and last roll 16, 23 of the backstay and traction stands respectively are driven directly from a motor 24 whereas the other rolls 17-22 are each driven through a differential gear 32. The stands each have a common drive shaft 25, 27 respectively and each variable speed roll has a pair of associated input shafts 31, 35 to a gear box 40 for the variable gear 36 and the differential gear 32. The output of the variable gear 36 acts through a reduction gear 38 whose output shaft 39 drives the differential pinion housing. The drives are arranged so that the roll speeds progressively increase in the backstay stand and decrease in the traction stand. Any one of the rolls of each stand may be driven directly, Figs. 3-5 (not shown).
