A rolling mill which is convertible between two- and three-high working, incorporates different roll driving arrangements for each condition. For three-high working, suitable for rolling narrow strips, the lower working roll 2a is driven from a main motor shaft 10 through a shaft 12 and coupling 5b, while the backing roll 2c is driven from a motor 17 through gearing 16, 15 and a coupling 6b. The working roll 2b is frictionally driven by the roll 2c, the motor 17 serving to speed up or slow down the roll 2c and hence the working roll 2b without producing any rolling power. For 2-high rolling, suitable for producing rods, the heavier driving loads are met by driving the upper rolls using a pinion 9 in mesh with a pinion 7 on the shaft 10, the clutches 14 and 18 being appropriately engaged or disengaged for the two systems. Planetary, or bevel gears 15 and 16 may be employed.
