1,224,301. Rolling. COMPAGNIE DES ATELIERS ET FORGES DE LA LOIRE (St. Chamond Firminy St. Etienne Jacob-Holtzer). 10 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 7089/69. Heading B3M. A strip rolling mill incorporates a 4-high stand positioned between strip tensioning units 1 and 3, the work rolls 9 of the stand being frictionally driven by backing rolls 10. The rolls 2 or 4 of each individual tensioning unit are driven at the same speed, but a constant speed ratio is maintained between the rolls of the two units. The rolls are driven through gearing from a common motor, but a variable speed gear unit may be associated with the rolls of one set, to permit adjustment of the speed ratio. The rolls are driven with a constant but adjustable value of torque, either through a slipping clutch or by a constant torque motor. Two 4-high stands may be employed, but only one stand is operative at any one time. By selecting a suitable value of driving torque for the tensioning units, a desired tension is applied to the strip during rolling and the flatness of the strip can be controlled. This control is possible by using work rolls whose crown varies with the force exerted on them by the strip.
