Abstract
1440987 Stretch levelling drive I UNGERER 6 Dec 1973 [7 Feb 1973] 56479/73 Heading B3E [Also in Division G3] In an arrangement in which a strip of material 3 is guided under stretching traction over a plurality of rolls 1, 2, e.g. in a metal stretchstraightening machine, the drive or braking of one of the rolls is controlled in response to the difference between the variation in elongation that occurs as it passes over a roll and a desired value for this quantity. In the embodiment the elongation that occurs between entry and exit of roll 1 is measured by comparing the difference in the number of pulses per unit time from a transmitter 19/24 on the roll (equivalent to entry speed) and a second transmitter 20/25 on the material at exit (exit speed). This difference is compared by unspecified means with a desired value and the result used to adjust the speed of an electric motor driving roll 1 (Fig. 2, not shown). Alternatively correction may be effected by differential gear or slip coupling.
