Abstract
597,354. Milling-machines ; lathes. GARNETT, E. O. Aug. 14, 1945, No. 20947. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for forming curved surfaces includes a tool clamped to a plate mounted on supports for universal movement in one plane, a fixed spindle passing through a circular hole in the said plate and having a disc mounted thereon smaller in diameter than the said hole, and means for pressing the plate against the disc and moving the said plate round in Circumferential contact with the disc so that the point of the tool is moved in a circle or part of a circle having a diameter equal to the difference in diameter of the hole and the disc. A tool plate 6 with a diamond tool 24 on an extension 23 thereof is mounted on Compound slides 7, 3 guides by pads 10, 5 sliding in grooves 8, 4 and is formed with a circular hole 13, the circumference of which is kept in contact with a removable circular disc 15, mounted on a vertical fixed spindle 12 passing through the said hole, by means of a spring-pressed plunger 22 pressing on a cylindrical surface 18 of a plate 17 secured to the plate 6. Thus, as the plunger is rotated about the spindle 12 by means of a handle 27 turning a cap 19 containing the plunger and rotatably mounted on the spindle, the tool plate is given a gyratory motion causing the tool point to move in a small circle 28. The machine may be used in a lathe for cutting radii.
