634,245. Grinding and polishing. BURGESS, A. F. (Paper Patents Co.). Sept. 9, 1947, No. 24756. [Class 60] Apparatus for grinding or polishing the surface of a cylinder comprises a form roll mounted to rotate upon an axis substantially parallel with the rotational axis of said cylinder, means for rotating said cylinder and said form roll, an endless abrasive belt interposed between said cylinder and said roll and having an abrasive surface operatively engaging said cylinder, and means for inducing said belt to move progressively along the form roll. The cylinder 10, such as the dryer of a paper machine, is rotated by a motor 15 through belt 15a, mitre gears 17, 18, worm gearing 19, 20 and pinions 22, 14, 13. The abrasive belt 38 passes round a form roll 26 and a tension roll 37, driven by belts 15b, 15c respectively from the motor 15. The two ends of the rolls 26, 37 are independently adjustable, and by making the distance between the rolls at one end different from that at the opposite end, the belt 38 is caused to creep along the rolls; alternatively, an additional guide roll 39 is provided which is inclined to the direction of travel of the belt 38, whereby the latter is caused to creep. For crowned rolls, the form roll 26 has a complementary shape; by inclining the form roll 26 relative to the cylinder, a modified shape is obtained on the cylinder. The apparatus is used for surfacing cylinders initially, or for re-surfacing worn cylinders in situ; steam may, during the operation, be supplied to the cylinder at the same pressure as when the cylinder is in use, so as to simulate working conditions.
