My invention relates to improvements in grinding machines, and more particularly lIl grinding machines for grinding wooden articles such as handles of spades and the like,

The object of the improvementsis to provide a grinding machine of this type in which the said rollers are mounted so that they adapt themselves to blanks of different dimensions, and with this object in view my invention consists in rockingly mountin the frame carr ing the rollers on a rocka l' lever adapte to move the said frame towards and away from the band.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding? parts. In said drawings, ig. 1 is an elevation showing the grindin machine,

In the example shown in the fi res the grindin machine comprises a tab e 5 pro- 'vided with uprights 6. At the left hand end of the table a drivin shaft 7 is mounted in bearings 8, which driving shaft is provided with pulleys 9 connected with a power shaft. At the side of the table 5 opposite to the shaft 7 an idle shaft 10 is mounted in bearings 11, and to the shafts 7 and 10 drums b are mounted on which an endless ta or band a is trained. On one of the uprights 6 a shaft f is mounted in'bearings' 12, and on the said shaft a lever g is rockin'gly mounted, the said lever carrying at one end a frame d and at its 50 oppoiste end a weighted body It. The construction of the feed rollers c and tail in Figs. 4 an 5. As shown in the said figures, the frame comprises a U-shaped bail 13 and transverse bars (1 and d fixed to the bottom ends of the flanges of the bail and provided with eyes 14 providing bearings for the trunnions 30 of the rollers c. As is best shown in Fig. 5, the member d is 05- I set at one end for accommodating mechanism for driving the rollers 0, and the said offset end is made integral with an upwardly directed arm 15 fixed at its top end to the web portion of the bail 13. The rollers '0 are provided with circumferential grooves on which a rope 7; is trained, so that the said rollers are rotated in unison. The shaft of one of the rollers 0 extends outwardly through its bearing 14, and it carries a bevel gear oin mesh with a similar bevel gear 0 keyed to a shaft r, the said shaft being mounted in a bearing block 16 secured to the arm-15. At its top end the shaft r carries a bevel gea'r n which is in mesh with a similar bevel gear n secured to a shaft 17, the shaft 17 is rotatably mounted in a block 18 secured to the bail 13, and it carries a pulley 19. The shaft 17 is passed through an eye at of the lever .g.
The pulley 19 is connected by a belt at with a pulley 20 secured to the shaft f, and the shaft f is adapted to be rotated by .means of a pulley 21 secured thereto, a belt is and. a pulley 22 from a shaft 23 mounted in bearmgs 24 and connected with the shaft 7 by pulleys 25 and 26 and a belt 27.
The block 18 is secured to the bail 13 by means of wing nuts t passed through slots 8 of the bail and ermitting the frame (1 and the rollers 0 to be ixed in different angular positions relatively to the band a. I

Thereby the band a is made to travel in the direction of the arrow :1: shown in Fig. 3, and the rollers c are rotated by means of the belt 27, the shaft 23, the belt is, the shaft f,'the belt m, the shaft 17, thebevel gears n, 11 the shaft 1', the bevel gears 0, 0 and the band a, and they are simultaneously shifted transversely of the band a by reason of the inclined position of the rollers c.
For varying the lateral movement of the blank the angular position of the rollers 0 relatively to the band a is varied by fixing the block18 in different angular positions on the bail 13. s
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. A grinding machine of the character set forth, comprising an abrading belt, a lever and a frame, the lever being swingably mounted on a shaft and the frame depending from the lever above said belt, rollers carried by the frame to operate upon a workpiece upon said belt, and manually operated means for forcibly drawing the lever downwardly at will to cause the rollers to exert an appli-,
cation of force upon the workpiece.
2. A grinding machine of the character set forth, comprising an abrading belt, a shaft, a lever thereon, said lever being mounted intermediate its ends for rocking movement and carrying a weight to one side of said shaft, a frame on the opposite side of the lever, depending therefrom over said belt, rollers on the frame, adapted to operate upon a workpiece upon said belt, and a treadle operated rod attached to said lever on the same side thereof from which the frame depends, for forcibly drawing the lever downwardly to causethe rollers to exert an application of force upon the workpiece. 6. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination with a shaft, of a lever mounted on the shaft for rocking movement, a frame carried by the lever, rollers on the frame, means by which to impart rocking movement to the lever, and means for driving the rollers from said shaft.
In a machine of the character set forth, the combination with a shaft, of a lever mounted on the shaft for rocking movement and carrying a frame at a point distant from the shaft, a air of rollers on theframe, means for 'dnvin one of the rollers from said shaft, and a riving connection between said rollers.
