DEVICE FOR GRINDING AND POLISHING CYLINDERS Original Filed Sept. 28, 1931 Patented Oct. 10, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR GRINDING AND POLISHING CYLINDERS Friedrich Kettlein, Britz, Germany 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in grinding machines for grinding and polishing cylinders, more particularly coppered or copper covered intaglio cylinders by means of a' plain 5 horizontal grinding or polishing wheel respectively which is adapted to carry out an oscillating movement over an axis vertical to the work piece.
In contradistinction to known devices of the aforementioned description, the present invention is performed without the provision of belts, chains or flexible shafts of any description. In combination with the preferred manner of performing the present invention provision is made 5 to allow for the grinding tool to be swung free from the work piece, while a known sliding weight lever is provided for the regulation of the grinding pressure, serving at the same time as rest for the swung up tool carrier.
Other details of the present invention and a simple and reliable device for driving the grinding wheel will become apparent in the course of the following description:
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown for the purpose of illustration:
Fig. 1 is a schematic illustration of the tool carrier movement.

Fig. 1 shows the movement of the tool carrier from the side. 1 represents the cylinder to be ground in horizontal position, 2 is the tool carrier or grinding head which rotates on the vertical axis 3; The tool carrier is shown in the medium position, while the two extreme limits of movement are shown in dotted lines. This movement is caused by parts 4 and 5 constituting an elbow lever swinging around axis 6. The oscillating movement of this elbow lever is executed by means of a cam or eccentric disc 7 and roll 8. Fig. 2 shows the manner in which the aforementioned rotary movement of the grinding wheel is efi'ected. 9 is a continually rotating pinion in permanent engagement with gear wheellO which in its turn is attached to parts 4 and 5. Pinion 9 is driven by electromotor 25 by means of reduction gears as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Gear wheel 10 drives the grinding wheel 2 over a bevel gear 11 and 12, a shaft 13, a second set of bevel gears 14 and 15, a set of gear wheels 16 and 17, which latter is mounted on shaft 3 together with the grinding tool 2. Bevel gears 11, 12 and 14, 15, as well as shaft 13 and gear wheels 16, 17 are mounted on the tool carrier or grinding arm and follow the latter's oscillating movement.
By transmitting the movement of pinion 9, the axis of which is fixed, to gear wheel 10, the axis of which moves radially to axis 6 in a to and fro movement, the drive of grinding wheel 2 is subjected to a mechanically oscillating irregularity which has been proved to be an extremely favourable effect on the grinding and polishing process.
Having now particularly described my present invention and the'manner in which it is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:;
A grinding device for grinding and polishing cylinders, more particularly copper coated intaglio cylinders, comprising in a combination a lever which is pivoted around a fixed axis at a distance from one end, means arranged at one end of said lever, adapted to cause-an oscillating movement of said lever and a gear wheel provided at the other end of said oscillating lever, said gear wheel being in permanent engagement with a pinion rotating around said fixed axis, a tool carrier pivoted at one end on the support of said gear wheel and carrying a horizontal grinding tool at the other end, driving means comprising bevel gear wheels to drive said grinding tool, said drivingmeans being mounted on said tool carrier and driven from said gear wheel, the axis of said gear wheel being adapted to swing radially around the fixed axis of said pinion in combination with the movement of said oscillating lever, causing the whole device to follow the movement of said oscillating lever, said tool carrier being adapted to be swung free, from the work piece. by swinging it upwards around its articulation, means for the regulation of the grinding pressure acting on said tool carrier and supporting it when swung up in to a position of rest.
