ABRADING-MACHINE.
Application filed October 31,1913, Serial No. 798,401. Renewed December 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Jorr N HALTERBEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrading-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an abrading machine of the class in which a traveling belt or abrading material is fed past the work.
In machines of this character where the belt is fed longitudinally the work is frequently given a streaked appearance due to the presence of bald spots in the abrading material and it is one of the prime objects of my invention to give the work a uniformly smooth appearance.
Another object of my invention is to provide supports for the work having adjustable means for holding and guiding the work in different positions relative to the traveling belt.
The various other objects of the invention will be more fully set forth in the following description of the form of mechanism embodying the invention which consists broadly in feeding the belt across the work and at the same time giving the belt a relatively slow edgewise movement back and forth transversely of its general line of, travel, and in other new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth andclaimed.

ings:l*igure 1 is a front elevation of an abrading machine embodying a preferred form of my invention and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the particular mechanism shown in the drawings a shaft 1 is driven through belt pulleys 2 and 3, which shaft has fixed thereto a driving drum 4 about which passes an endless band 5 of emery cloth or sand paper. This band bears against a shiftable tightening roll 6 and passes about the small roll 7 and large roll 8 and returns, preferably in a set vertical plane to the drum l.
Adjacent the drum 4 is a table 9 extending transversely of the vertical portion of the belt and adapted to be swung on a pivot to and from the belt into adjusted position in which it may be locked by a binding nut 10 engaging a pivoted arm 11 depending from the table. Mounted in the working face of the table is a dovetail slide 12 car- Specification of Letters Patent.

A horizontally disposed table 15, preferably forming a fixed part of the frame of the machine is positioned with one end adjacent the roll 7 and a co-acting depending table 16 is pivoted for movement about the aXis of the roll 7 and is adapted to be locked in position to form an angle with the horizontal table by some suitable means, such as, the bolt and slot connection 17.
A. vertically disposed guiding plate 18 extends outwardly from roll 7 and tables 15 and carrying a guiding roller 19 which is locked in adjusted position relative to the roll 7 by means of the bolt and slot connection 20.
The roll Sis idle on its shaft 21 when shaft is pivoted intermediate the width of the roll by means of a fixed pin 22. The shaft is given a slight rocking movement about the pin and in a direction parallel to the general movement of the belt by connecting an end of the shaft to an adjustable reciprocating rod 23 which is actuated by the eccentric cam 24, driven by suitable meshed gearings from the shaft 1.
It will be clear from the construction above described that a cylindrical, a conical or a flat surface may be ground on the work by positioning the same on the adjustable table 9, which work may be centered or guided by means of the pin 13. By adjusting the angular position of the tables 15 and 16 depressed or irregular surfaces of the work may be ground on the small roll 7 and the irregularly curved surfaces may be guided thereon about the adjusted roller 19.
The oscillating of the large roll 8 about the pivot pin 22 will cause the belt 5 to travel edgewise across its general line of travel with a movement relatively slow compared with its rate of travel longitudinally. This action will cause the abrasive material simultaneously to travel across the work in two directions at right angles to each other and will have the effect of uniformly cutting or grinding the surface of the work and eliminates the streaked appearance due to the lack of uniformity in the abrading characters of different portions of the belt.

cam movement between said shaft and said oscillating roll whereby said belt is given a slight edgewise movement while it is fed longitudinally.

In an. abrading mach1ne,"the combina- 7 tion with a horizontally disposed roll adapted to have an abrading belt passed about the same, of a horizontally disposed table and a depending table adjacent said roll, said tables being adjustable relative to each other about the axis of said roll and an outwardly extending work guiding plate disposed at an angle to said axis. l
3. In an abrading machine, an abrading member comprising a traveling belt, means for feeding said belt longitudinally relative tOftllB work and automatic means alternately bearing first on one and then on the opposite edge/of the belt ,for oscillating said belt edgewise while being fed across the work.
.4. In an abrading machine, an abrading member comprising a traveling belt, guiding rollers rotatably mounted in set position for maintaining said belt in a set plane, and mechanism'disposed between said rollers and engaging said beltto move 'thes'ame laterally of its path oftravel.
'5. In an abrading machine, an abrading member adapted to be fed past the work and having a relatively quick longitudinal movement and a relatively slow transverse movement simultaneous with said longitudinal movement.
6. In an abrading machine, the combination with a roll adapted to have an abrading belt passed about the same, of a pair of tables, said tables being angularly adjustable relative to each other about the axis of said roll.
7. In an abrading machine, a plurality of spaced rolls disposed parallel to each other, an abrading member comprising a traveling belt passing about said rolls, ashaft for one of said rolls pivoted intermediate its length and means engaging said shaft for oscillating its roll in a plane parallel to one of the directions of travel of the belt.
8. In an abrading machine, a plurality of spaced rolls disposed parallel to each other, an abrading member comprising a traveling belt passing about said rolls, a shaft for driving one of said rolls, another of said rolls being pivoted intermediate its width for oscillating about its axis of rotation, a cam movement driven from said shaft and a connection between said cam movement and said oscillating roll whereby said belt is given a slight edgewise movement while it is fed longitudinally and means forming a part of said connection for varying the ratio of edgewise movement to longitudinal movement of the belt.
