Surfacing and polishing.-Relates to apparatus for polishing, grinding surfacing, abrading, &c. steel, nickel steel, hard metal and other tubes, rods, bars, &c. A band or belt m, Fig. 4, faced with polishing material, is driven, by the long drum h, in contact with the tube f, to be polished. The pulley k is carried in a pivoted slide j, traversed along the bar i automatically or by the hand lever o. The tube f is carried by the coned ends of two spindles, mounted on headstocks. One of the spindles is driven, by means of a pulley and band, in an opposite direction to that of the drum h, the other, which is rotatable and adjustable in position, is made to slide to and fro by means of a small hand-lever, a weight or spring tending to force the spindle inwards. The band m is kept tight by a spring p. The pivoted slide can be turned to the position shown in dotted lines, to remove the band from the work. When grinding bars &c., the bars are carried by suitable chucks and held stationary while each side is successively cleaned. Instead of using the long drum k, a traversing pulley may be substituted.
