A machine for grinding a flat endless steel band 10, Fig. 2, such as that employed in a continuous vulcanizing machine, comprises two rotary drums 16, 18 to support the band, bearings 27, 30 to support the drums, removable supports 29 for the bearings at one side of the machine to permit replacement of the band, an endless abrading belt 58, and means for traversing the belt along a rotating roll 56, Fig. 1. The band is driven by the drum 18 and placed under tension by the drum 16, the bearings 30 of which are displaceable in guides 32 by hydraulic pressure. Each pair of drum bearings is bolted to a cantilever support 22 providing a gap 25, Fig. 4, for the passage of the band 10 while the roll 56 is journaled in two supports 38 pivotally connected at 40 to the base 20 of the machine and held in operative position by pneumatic pistons 42. Screws 48 and handoperated worm drives 54 permit independent adjustment of the supports 38. The roll 56 is driven by a motor 68 and the belt 58 traversed along it by a screw-propelled carriage 62 provided with pneumatically loaded idler rolls 60 and 72 for the belt 58 and a cushioning belt 71. The inside surface of the steel band is simultaneously abraded by a belt 94 operated in the same manner as the belt 58 and co-operating with a drum 80 journaled in a frame 81 pivotally connected at 82 to the machine base 20, grinding pressure being applied by pneumatic pistons 83. Scrapers 36 clean the drums 18, 80 and the faces of the steel band. The abrading belts are automatically withdrawn from the work if the load on their driving motors exceeds a predetermined value. This is accomplished by a solenoid-operated valve which cuts off the air supply to the pistons 42, 83 and connects their cylinders to exhaust when relays in the motor circuits are operated by the increased current. These relays also operate a holding circuit so that a manually-operated switch has to be opened before the belts can be returned into contact with the work.
