Abstract
395,253. Grinding-machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Norton Co. ; New Bond Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Dec. 16, 1932, No. 35730. [Class 60.] Trueing rotating tools; wheels. - Work of non-circular contour, such as a rotary or sliding cam, is ground without relative movement of the grinding wheel and work towards and from each other by first shaping the wheel so that its operative contour is complementary to that of the finished work piece and then rotating the wheel and moving the work-piece in synchronism at different surface rates so that the same portion of the wheel cyclically and repeatedly grinds the same portion of the work piece. A grinding wheel 11 is driven by a gear 36 meshing with a worm 35 driven by an electric motor 27. On the shaft of the worm 35 is slidable a worm 38 meshing with a gear on a shaft 41 rotating the work. The slidable connection allows the wheel to be fed toward and from the work by a hand-wheel 25 geared to a screw 21 engaging a half nut 20. A spiral gear 54 on the shaft 41 drives a gear 55 connected by a telescopic shaft and universal joints with a gear 65 driving a shaft 68, the shafts 41, 68 rotating at the same speed. The shaft 68 rotates the pattern 49 to be copied in contact with a plunger 47 carrying a diamond 46 for shaping the grinding wheel before grinding, or trueing it after a period of use. The plunger 47 is held in contact with the pattern by a spring plunger 50. This mechanism is fed towards the wheel as the shaping or trueing proceeds by a hand-wheel 75 and may be traversed laterally by a hand-wheel on a screw 80. A plurality of trueing mechanisms and grinding wheels may be used in one machine for grinding autocar cam-shafts. The invention is applicable to the forming of irregular surface contours on reciprocatory bodies and internal surfaces and on the side surfaces of annular bodies.
