Abstract

276,755. Turner, A., and Turner, W. E. June 7, 1926. Pouncing.-Relates to felt-hat-brim finishing machines of the kind in which two horizontal levers carry sandpaper-covered pads which are rapidly oscillated in contact with the upper and lower surfaces of the brim, and consists in improved mechanism by which the machine can be set to perform a predetermined number of oscillations and then, automatically, stop with the upper pad lifted for the removal and introduction of work. The work table k is adjustably pivoted to an arm j', itself pivoted to the machine frame and held in adjusted position by a clamp passing through a radial slot in a bracket j. Upper and lower pads are mounted on levers e, e<2> oscillated about a shaft f by oppositely-disposed eccentrics on a shaft d. The upper lever e<1> is vertically slidable, and is supported by a rod e<3> from a lever n pivoted at n<2> and weighted at its free end. A slotted link q supports this lever from a lever p<6> keyed to a rock-shaft p<5> and urged upwardly at its free end by a spring p<9>. The other end of the lever p<6> is linked to a treadle p<7>. The main shaft h, carrying fast and loose pulleys i, i<*> and a pulley g driving the shaft d, also carries a chain wheel h<1> driving a shaft o on which is a worm o'. The worm wheel is mounted in a bearing o<8> pivoted in a bracket o<9> and tilted in or out of mesh with the worm by a lever p<2> linked to an arm on the rock shaft p<5>. On the shaft of the worm-wheel is a plate p formed with a concentric slot along which a block p' with an inclined end may be adjusted. A spring catch normally holds the lever p<6> in its lower position. After a number of oscillations of the pads determined by the position of the block p' in its slot, the block releases the catch and allows the spring p‹ to raise the lever p<6> and rock the shaft p<5>. The raising of the lever p<6> raises the upper pad, and the rocking of the shaft p' takes the worm-wheel out of mesh with the worm o'. The worm-wheel is weighted so that, on release from the worm, it returns to starting position. At the same time a further arm on the shaft p<5> moves belt-shifting forks to shift the belt on to the loose pulley. The table. k carries a roller l engaging the inside of the hat and retracted along a guide to permit change of work by a handle l<3>. A spring l<1> normally holds the roller in operative position. A work-shield m is also operatively connected to the handle l<3>, so that it is tipped out of the way simultaneously with the retraction of the roller l. The weighted lever n also separates the usual feeding-cones, simultaneously with the raising of the upper pad lever e', by rods o', o<6> and an intermediate lever.
