Abstract

222,745. Turner, A., and Turner, W. E. Feb. 9, 1924. Ironing.-Relates to hat ironing machines of the kind in which a heated iron is automatically traversed in a curved path in contact with a hat on a rotating block, and consists in means whereby the travel of the iron is quickened at the tip and corners of the hat and means wherebv the iron is automatically thrown clear of the hat after one, two, three, or four traverses from brim to brim, or a part traverse, or can be kept in contact continuously, all at the will of the operator. The hat is mounted as usual on a rotating block e, Fig. 1, on a shaft provided with fast and loose pulleys. A worm c<1> on the shaft drives a worm-wheel v<1>, Fig. 2, loose on its spindle v but adapted to be clutched thereto by a bar w having a handle w<1> at one end, engaging at its centre the upper slotted end of the spindle v and formed at its other end with a plate w<2> on which are pins selectively engaging holes in the worm-wheel. On the lower end of the spindle v is secured an arm u<1> which by means of an adjustable link u reciprocates a slide t. Rack teeth on this slide gear with a pinion r, Fig. 1, secured to a shaft carrying an eccentric pinion q gearing with a similar pinion o on the pivot of the carrier for the iron g. This carrier comprises an arm m pivoted at n<1> and carrying a sleeve l to which is pivoted a member j to which the iron holder h is pivoted at i. The holder h has an extension h<1> provided with a handle g<3> and caused to bear against a stop j<2> by a weight g<1> and cord g<2>. A bracket a<2> carries a spring stop a<5> in one with a pin a<6> normally supporting a pivoted stop a<3>. The member j is provided with a similar spring stop j<1> connected to the pin j<2>. In operation the handle w<1> is raised to enable the iron to be moved to the desired starting point. Normally when the carrier m completes the first semicircular movement the member j contacts with the stop a<5>, allowing the stop a<3> to fall to a position to be engaged by the stop j<1> when these members come together after a further double transverse. This contact retracts the pin j<2> and causes the iron to fall clear of the hat. A loose pin may keep the stop a<3> out of action when ironing is to be continued. Thus by setting the starting position and the stop a<3> the iron may be automatically thrown clear of the hat at the completion of any desired action up to four complete traverses from brim to brim, or may be kept in contact indefinitely. The hat is held on the block by an elastic ring y of flat closely coiled metal wire.
