Be it known that Vieron MATALavAGn, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Drill and Valve Grinder, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to improvements in an improved combination tool designed Jfor garage and small machine shop work wherein is co-operativelyprovided a two multiple speed drill having seli:l feeding features cmployed in conjunction therewith, and means whereby the drill may be quickly and read-l ily "converted into a tool capable'or boing employed for the purpose of grinding the valves or an internal combustion engine.
.Certain of thelobjects ot the invention are to provide a drill wherein is embodied. a hollow frame capable of receiving a rotatable spindle, said frame being provided with a plurality ot gears which are arranged concentrically with respect to said spindle, and which gears are rotated by a main or master gear and are so arranged as to be coupled for rotation with said spindle by means of a plurality7 of selectively operable key elements, which are slidably carried inconjunction with said spindle and are arranged to be inserted as desired in key ways provided in thev gears, whereby upon the selective operation or said keys varying speeds of rotation will be imparted to said spindle from the master gear, and similarly, said keys may be actuated so that the master gear will impart an oscillatory back` and forth motion to thespindle, ,in order to adapt the latter tovalve grinding movements; in cooperative means for lowering said spindle within said trame during the carrying out of drill operations, said latter means consisting or a pivotally mounted le-v ver. Mounted upon the upper portion 4 of the main frame 2 is a supplemental or secondary frame 13, this frame having its lower por tion provided with a sleeve 14, which is adapted to be inserted in a vertical opening 15 provided in the end 4, and a thumb screw 16 is provided which is threaded into the side of the end 4 so as to impinge upon the sleeve 14, and to thereby securely connect the secondary frame with the main frame, rEhe secondary frame, in turn, is provided with a removable side plate 17, which is secured to the upper and lower ends 18 of the secondary frame by the use of screws or the like. This plate 17is provided with inwardly projecting arms 19, 2O and 21, which are provided with vertically registering bores 22 for the reception of the vertically extending spindle 23 of' the tool. The lower end of the spindle passes through the sleeve 14 and is suitably connected with the revolvn ing chuck or tool holder 11. rilhe upper end of the spindle is provided with a threaded cap 24, in which is received the lower spheri-y cal end 25 of a feed screw 26, the latter being, in turn, threaded into an adjusting nut 27, which is positioned between the upper end of the secondary frame and an integral linger 28 formed therewith. By this construction the nut 27 will be maintained against vertical movement, and yet will be permitted to rotate so as to effect the raising and lowering of the screw 26 and consen quently the spindle 23. 1f desired, the upper end of the screw may be provided with a key way 29 in which a key 30, carried by the upper end of the secondary frame, may be positioned so that the screw will be prevented from rotating, that is, the operation of the nut 27 will effect vertical movement on the part ofthe screw without rotating the latter, and hence through the provision of the cap 24 and the spherical end 25 of the screw a good bearing is provided to permit of the more or less rapid rotation of the spindle.
1n order to effect the rotation of the spindle the side of the secondary frame is provided with a bearing in which is received the operating shaft 31. As shown in Figure 1, this shaft is provided with a squared end, which is adapted to receive any suitable form of manipulating device, not shown, such for example as a hand crank or a power wheel. rlhe inner end of the shaft 31 is connected in any suitable manner with a master or compound gear 32, which is of peculiar configuration and consists of an outer series of gear teeth 33, an inner gear 34, and intermediate series of segmental gear teeth 35 and 36. These teeth, as will be obvious, may be formed integrally or separately with respect to the gear 32 as a whole, in order that they will rotate in unison. Also, the outer edge of the gear 32 is provided with gear teeth 37, the function of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The teeth 33 are employed to drive the spindle 23 at its highest or first speed, and to this end the said gear teeth 33 mesh with a bevel pinion 38, which loosely surrounds the spindle 23 and is confined for rotation between the lower arm 21 and the lower portion of the secondary frame. To connect the pinion 38 for rotation with the spindle, the latter is provided with a vertically extending groove 39, in which is fit a sliding bar 40 having a key extension 41 integrally formed upon its lower end. This bar is centrally provided with a recessed extension 42, in which is positioned a ring 43, the latter being disposed within the hub of the arm 20. The arm 20, in turn, is provided with a slot 44 having offset portions 45, and this slot and its offset portions are adapted to receive an actuating pin 46 connected with the ring 43. Normally, the pin 4G rests within the offset portion 45 formed midway in the slot 44, but it will be observed by turning the pin laterally the same may be moved out of the intermediate offset portion 45 and elevated so that the pin may be positioned within the offset portion formed in the upper end of the slot. This movement on the part of the pin results in raising the ring 43 so that corresponding elevation of the bar 4G is effected, and this movement of the bar per` mits the key extension 41 thereof to enter into one or the other of the key way slots 47 provided in the pinion 38. Therefore, the rotation of the master gear will result in the rotation of the pinion 38, and when the key extension 41 is within the slot 47,I the rotation of the pinion will result in turning the spindle 23 at its highest rate of speed. To rotate the spindle at a lower rate of speed, the pin of the ring 43 is moved so that it occupies its lower most position within the slot 44, thereby causing the extension 42 to engage within one of the key ways formed in the pinion 48, which pinion being in mesh with the gear 34 willrotate the spindle 23 at its slowest rate of speed. It will be observed that the pinion 48 is loosely mounted for rotation around said spindle and between the arms 20 and 21 of the supplemental frame. rEhe key extensions 41 and 42 are so arranged that tliesame may be both out of engagement with their respective pinions at the same time and to be also capable of occupying but one pinion during a given operation. rThrough this construction a multiple speed drill is provided which may be simply, positively and easily controlled.

In a combination tool of the character described, a main frame, a supplemental frame a spindlejournaled in said supplemental frame, a master gear carried by said supplemental frame, the said supplemental frame and spindle being removable from the main frame as an operative unit, and means co-operative with said gear to impart acon*l tinuous rotary motion to said spindle or an oscillatory back and forth motion thereto.
