Abstract
819,171. Sewing machines. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Jan. 30, 1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 2901/56. Class 112 [Also in Group IX] Tufted fabric is made by feeding to a tufting point a porous elastic web formed of elastic fibres in random distribution, such as the fabric described in Specification 794,725 [Group IX], forcing apart from one another the individual fibres of the web, and passing tufting yarns between the forced apart fibres, the tuft yarns being held in the web by permitting the stretched fabric to be released after tufting. The tufted web may be united to a base of cushioning material, preferably a thicker web of similar porous elastic material. The elastic fabric web 1 passes from a feed roller 2<SP>1</SP> past conventional tufting means A to a feed roller 6 which rotates faster than roller 2 in order to stretch the web in the longitudinal direction. The web is stretched in the lateral direction also, between rollers 2<SP>1</SP> and 6, by means 16. The tufted web is then permitted to relax in passing to a pair of rollers 8, 8<SP>1</SP> and is collected on a roller 9. The tufting needles are preferably of the "ball point" type and may be lubricated with water or with a mixture of water and a substance such as glycerine, ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol.
