Abstract

775,654. Impregnating yarns ; pile fabrics. BRINTONS, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1953 [Aug. 26, 1952], No. 21366/52. Classes 120 (2), 120 (3) and 142 (4). Yarns for the pile of Axminster carpets are highly twisted and have the twist set by impregnation with a synthetic resin, latex or size which imparts no visible change to the appearance of the yarn and is capable of having its setting effect destroyed after the carpet has been woven. The impregnation is preferably carried out in a doubling machine in which yarns pass through an eye 6 of a stop-motion, under a guide roller 16, between rollers 10, 13, back to and around the guide roller 16, and between rollers 10, 13 again to a twisting device 5. The roller 10 is partly submerged in a setting agent in a trough 9. As an alternative, the impregnation may be carried out by a dipping or similar process. After weaving tufts cut from the yarn into a carpet, the carpet is subjected to a steaming or other finishing treatment capable of destroying the setting effect of the impregnant.
