Abstract

925,180. Finishing fabrics; pile fabrics. COLLINS & AIKMAN CORPORATION. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 14, 1959], No. 42970/60. Classes 42 (1) and 74 (2). A method of making a tufted pile fabric comprises looping a yarn in a base fabric, separating the fibres of the loops of the yarn above the base fabric, drawing the separated fibres partially out of the yarn and intermeshing the drawn-out fibres to lock the yarn in the base fabric. A yarn 10 is looped into a backing material having yarns 11 running in one direction. The fabric 12 is subjected to the kneeing action of a tigering or carding roll 13 which separates some of the fibres 15 of the yarn 10, Fig. 5. The fabric 12 is then twice subjected to the tigering action of a tigering roll to form the resultant fabric shown in Fig. 9, the fibres 15 being fully drawn out and intertangled. The fabric 12 is passed under a hot grooved roller 16, Fig. 10, and is sheared at 17 to form a level pile surface, Fig. 11. The yarns 10 may be coloured on the back of the backing material and after the operations described above the design is substantially transferred to the pile surface. Both sides of the fabric 12 may be treated by the method described above. The yarn 10 may comprise polyacrylic fibres.
