Abstract

An ornamental pattern is produced in the face of a fabric having pile yarns projecting from a face thereof by saturating the pile yarns of the fabric with a lubricating material whereby the yarns are saturated across the face of the fabric in accordance with a predetermined pattern and then tigering the pile yarns of both saturated and unsaturated portions of the pile in the face of the fabric simultaneously to open and draw the fibres of the pile yarns thereof out of the backing materials, the tigering of the pile drawing the fibres of the saturated portions of the pile yarns considerably higher out of the backing material than the fibres of the unsaturated portions by virtue of the lubricating material. The fabric (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises pile yarns (12) looped into a backing material (11) and is passed with the backing (11) uppermost over a roller (20), Fig. 2 (not shown), and between a printing roller (21) and a pressure roller (22). The roller (21) is engaged by a back-up roll (23) immersed in a bath (24) of a liquid lubricating or softening agent and applies this agent to the fabric (10) in the predetermined pattern. The fabric (10) passes between pressure rolls (26), (27), through a drier (28) and may then be stored for later operation or may pass directly to a tigering roll (29), Fig. 3 (not shown), which opens p the pile loops. Lubricating or softening agents are specified.
