Abstract

1375196 Non - woven fabrics WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 29 Aug 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 43814/71 Heading D2B A method of making a water-repellent non- woven fabric comprises forming a suspension of fibres in a foam-containing liquid which also contains a surface active agent, forming a sheet from the suspension, treating the sheet with an appropriate chemical solution to destroy the surface activity of the residual surface active agent in the sheet, saturating the treated sheet with an organic water-repellent material, and heating the saturated sheet to effect drying thereof. The surface activity of the surface active agent may be destroyed by washing in a suitable chemical solution or by application of such a solution with a size press. The surface active agent may, be sodium: dodecyl benzene sulphonate and the solution used to destroy it may contain aluminium sulphate, triformate, or chloride, or zirconium acetate or mixtures thereof. The water-repellent material may be organic chromium derivatives, e.g. Quilon, Quintolan, a zirconium wax, e.g. Mystolene, or a modified melamine resin, e.g. Phobotex (R.T.M.). A latex, e.g. an acrylic latex may also be applied with the waterrepellent material. The fibres may comprise a mixture of kraft pulp and rayon fibres.
